Alejandro Rubinstein: What’s in a (Jewish) Name?
ENGLISH CORNER, CON LINDA JIMÉNEZ – This week’s trivia question: What Jewish surnames refer to precious gems, and how were they acquired?
For two decades Alejandro Rubinstein has studied the origins, meaning and evolution of given names and surnames that have Jewish connotations. He spoke with us about all of these aspects, as well as how names are chosen, and why some people change them. Alejandro is also doing a new weekly program, El buen nombre, in Spanish on Radio Sefarad, in which he goes into these aspects in greater depth, and I highly recommend it to all our Spanish-speaking listeners.
