Carla Berg: Multifaceted Brazilian-born Jewish Singer

ENGLISH CORNER, CON LINDA JIMÉNEZ – This week’s trivia question:  How many languages does Carla sing in, and why did she decide to sing in Ladino?

Carla Berg was born in Brazil to parents of Syrian Jewish origin. She is an artist, composer, and multicultural singer as well as an educational psychologist. After meeting her husband she relocated to the United States, where she began to sing opera and American music styles, but she missed the music of her own Brazilian and Latin roots and began to develop her own style, drawing from the many sources that are part of her creative and personal identity.  While her music shows influences of a variety of cultures and languages, her most recent projects are centered on Ladino, and songs she has written for Jewish holidays.

This week Carla is speaking with us about what it was like growing up Jewish in Brazil, and her work.
