Counting Europe’s Jews, with Dr. Daniel Staetsky
ENGLISH CORNER, CON LINDA JIMÉNEZ – This week’s trivia question: King David conducted one of the first censuses in history. Why did he do it?
The Institute for Jewish Policy Research (JPR) is a London-based research institute and think tank. It specializes in contemporary Jewish affairs, with a particular focus on Jews in Britain and across Europe. We have done programs about the Institute itself and the report on the results of their survey of antisemitism in Europe that was published in December 2018.
According to JPR, 1.4 million Jews live in Europe, 1.1 million of whom are based in the 28 countries of the European Union. Building a robust understanding of the demographic characteristics of these populations and the internal dynamics of community life is essential to the future of Jewish life on the continent. To this end, JPR created the European Jewish Demography Unit in January 2019. The Unit is led by JPR Senior Research Fellow, Dr. Daniel Staetsky, and chaired by the world’s leading expert in Jewish demography, Professor Sergio DellaPergola and its purpose is to generate data about Jewish populations in Europe to help support community development across the continent.
