History of the Jews in Ireland, with Alexander Vard
ENGLISH CORNER, CON LINDA JIMÉNEZ – This week’s trivia question: When and why did the first Ashkenazi Jews arrive in Ireland, and where were they from?
The history of the Jews in Ireland extends back several centuries. Although the Jewish community in Ireland has always been small in numbers, it is well established and has generally been well-accepted into Irish life. Jews in Ireland have historically enjoyed a relative tolerance that was largely absent elsewhere in Europe.
Alexander Vard is a historian, tour guide and graphic designer based just outside Dublin, Ireland, where he lives on a barge with his two cats Frida and Diego. He was educated in Trinity College and Edinburgh University and in 2017 he started a walking tour company focusing on Dublin’s Jewish quarter, known as Little Jerusalem. He currently works for a Dublin-based charity as their resident graphic artist.
In this program he is speaking with us about the history of the Jews in Ireland.
