Jewish Prague Today, with Diego Bransburg

Jewish Prague Today, with Diego Bransburg

ENGLISH CORNER, CON LINDA JIMÉNEZ – This week’s trivia question:  Why does the Spanish synagogue in Prague have that name?

Diego Bransburg was born in Argentina and lived in Israel before relocating to Prague 27 years ago.  He is a member of the Jewish community there and also a tour guide specializing in the Jewish history of the Czech Republic.  Last week Diego spoke with us about that history, and in this program he is telling us specifically about Jewish Prague.

Of the several synagogues that are now part of the Jewish Museum complex the one that most impressed me and moved me was the Pinkas Synagogue.  It was built in the 15th century and is now a memorial to Moravian and Bohemian Jews who perished in the Holocaust.  Its walls are covered with the names of more than 77,000 who died, and upstairs there are drawings made by children in the Terezin concentration camp.  In several of the synagogues there are also pictures of the hostages and posters calling for their release.
