ENGLISH CORNER, CON LINDA JIMÉNEZ – This week’s trivia question:  What is unique about Itzik Manger’s ballads?

Helen (Khayele) Beer is Lecturer in Yiddish in the department of Hebrew and Jewish Studies at University College London. She was also Tutor in Yiddish at Oxford University’s Department of Continuing Education. She teaches and lectures extensively in Britain and Europe and has participated in numerous Yiddish summer programs in different cities, including Oxford, Brussels, Amsterdam, Stockholm, Bucharest, Prague. and Paris. She is the Director of Ot Azoy, the annual Yiddish summer course in London.

Her main research interests are modern Yiddish literature, song and folklore, oral histories, Yiddish literature in interwar Poland and Romanian Yiddish literature.

Khayele has also worked extensively with the writings of Yiddish poet Itzik Manger.
