The Nash Didan Jews, with Sam Miller

The Nash Didan Jews, with Sam Miller

ENGLISH CORNER, CON LINDA JIMÉNEZ – This week’s trivia question:  What is a common Shabbat lunch food for the Nash Didan, and what color is it?

The Nash Didan are a small Jewish community, originally from the Northwest of Iran, that traces their heritage back to the Babylonian exile. Sam Miller is half Nash Didan, half Ashkenazi. His mother was born in Urmia, Iran. He is working to preserve all aspects of the cultural heritage of this community. In cooperation with the Jewish Language Project he is helping to preserve Lishan Didan, the endangered language of his mother’s family. This week we are speaking with Sam about the Nash Didan, their history, language and culture. (You can see recipes for some typical Nash Didan food on their website and here.)
