Tu B’Shevat: Not just the “Birthday of the Trees”

Tu B’Shevat: Not just the “Birthday of the Trees”

ENGLISH CORNER, CON LINDA JIMÉNEZ – This week’s trivia question: What are the seven species listed in the Book of Deuteronomy that Jews traditionally eat on the holiday of Tu B’Shevat?

Tu B’Shevat, the 15th of the Jewish month of Shevat, falls on February 6 this year.  Popularly, this holiday is known as the “birthday of the trees“, but there’s more to it than that, so this week we have two guests who will speak with us about what the holiday means and how it is celebrated.  First, Shifra Goldstein, who is with Chabad in Madrid, will tell us about some traditional and religious aspects of the holiday, and then Tamar Bar, who is a Jewish Studies teacher in Israel, will tell us about how it is celebrated there.
