Two New Novellas by Nora Gold

ENGLISH CORNER, CON LINDA JIMÉNEZ – This week’s trivia question:  What is a “flip book” and why did Nora choose to use this format?

Dr. Nora Gold is a prize-winning author who was born in Montreal, Canada, in 1952.  She received her BSW from McGill University and her MSW and PhD in social work from the University of Toronto, and at one time was a tenured professor of social work.

Her first book, Marrow and Other Stories, won a Canadian Jewish Book Award in 1999 and her novel Fields of Exile won the 2015 Canadian Jewish Literary Award.

In addition, she is the founder and editor of Jewish Fiction.net, a prestigious online literary journal that publishes Jewish-themed fiction from around the world, and is available free of charge.

In the fall of 2023 she published 18: Jewish Stories Translated From 18 Languages, which is an anthology of short stories originally published on Jewish Fiction.net. In previous programs we spoke with her about both of these, and we are including links to those programs on this page.

Gold is also a community activist focused primarily, though not exclusively, on organizations working in support of a progressive, socially just Israel. In 1982 she co-founded the New Israel Fund of Canada (NIFC); in 1996 Canadian Friends of Givat Haviva (the Canadian branch of Givat Haviva);  and she also founded JSpaceCanada in 2011. Gold has been formally recognized by the Toronto Jewish Community as an Outstanding Volunteer.

Her latest book contains two novellas:  In Sickness and in Health and Yom Kippur in a Gym. This week we are speaking with her about this book and her social activism.
